From idea to industrial reality

How CMSA Biel/Bienne SA – formerly Cendres+Métaux SA – created a new standard in the surface treatment of dental implants together with Sandmaster.

When a long-standing company like CMSA Biel/Bienne SA commits to progress, it does so out of conviction. The Biel-based company faced the following challenges in the surface treatment of dental implants: increasing productivity, improving process reliability, and enabling and ensuring seamless traceability of the implants. Together with Sandmaster, this evolved into a partnership that continues to set new standards today—technologically, professionally, and personally.

Who is CMSA Biel/Bienne SA?

CMSA Biel/Bienne is a trusted global partner for customers in the fields of medical technology and dentistry. The company primarily produces medical devices as a contract manufacturer for third parties.

The CMSA Group supports leading companies in the MedTech and luxury industries with high-precision components, advanced materials, and trusted Swiss manufacturing. From life-saving implants to iconic timepieces, their expertise contributes to innovations with impact.

From equipment manufacturer to technology partner

The story of CMSA Biel/Bienne exemplifies the development of Sandmaster.

It demonstrates how technological expertise, a partnership-oriented mindset, and a focus on the future work together: from idea to industrial reality.

"What began as a process to increase production evolved into a MedTech system that set new technological standards. Today, four Sandmaster systems are in use at CMSA Biel/Bienne. They ensure consistent process reliability and traceable quality for dental implants."

"Is it feasible?" – From prototype to production line

Every advancement begins with the question: “Is it feasible?”

Before the first system was developed, Sandmaster and CMSA Biel/Bienne conducted a feasibility study in the test laboratory to determine whether the surface treatment, traceability logging, and required process details for the dental implants could be implemented reliably and economically.

The tests confirmed the potential: the desired blasting pattern was achieved, and the requirements of the overall system were met.

It was thus clear that the overall system could be realized as requested by the customer. Sandmaster was able to responsibly transform this challenge into an industrial solution.

Technical advancements at a glance

Over the years, Sandmaster continuously refined the process in collaboration with CMSA Biel/Bienne, focusing on safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Single-use blasting media to reduce contamination and increase process reliability
  • Batch barcode for defining the blasting program and storing process logs
  • Manual loading – automated processing
  • Maintenance-friendly, robust design
  • 20 years of consistency in quality and process workflows

"The quality of our dental implants today is still the same as when the first sandblasting system was commissioned. This is because the process was correctly defined from the very beginning."

A solution that did not yet exist in this form.

CMSA Management is a pioneer in micromechanical manufacturing. However, in dental technology, the goal was to set a new standard: automation without compromising on purity, traceability, and quality.

Nearly 20 years ago, Sandmaster developed a novel control and software architecture for this purpose, featuring a barcode scanner, USB connectivity, and process logging.

Since then, every batch, every implant, and every process step has been fully documented. A concept that was visionary back then and is now standard practice.

"I knew exactly what the process should look like. Sandmaster made it a reality."

"We evolve together with our customers—technically and personally. That is exactly what defines this partnership."

Partnership on equal footing

What began as a development project is now a long-standing partnership on equal footing.

Together with Sandmaster, CMSA Management has, in over 20 years of partnership:

  • significantly increased production capacities
  • increased and secured long-term process reliability
  • enabled the traceability of dental implants

A long-standing partnership that demonstrates: progress in the details creates a lasting impact.
